Dear readers,
If you’ve got your hands on the 50th anniversary edition of Harriet the Spy, you’ve probably found the cute neighborhood map that shows you the exact location of all of her spots. This edition is tricky to find in stores and at the library, so I’ve got a copy of the map to share below, and also a link to a Google map that an unknown person put together that’ll take you on a cute walk:
Of course it’d be fun to spend a morning on a walk in Harriet’s neighborhood and maybe stop for a coffee in Carl Schurz Park, but you could also go on a Harriet-inspired mission in your own neighborhood!
Some things to keep an eye out for:
What are your favorite small details of your neighborhood buildings?
Can you identify any plants?
Do you recognize any dogs?
Have you witnessed any particularly special human interactions?
What have you heard while eavesdropping?
Do you notice any flyers taped to light posts? Stop and read them all.
Put your spy glasses on and take a stroll, perhaps with a notebook in hand. Take this opportunity to start a conversation with a neighbor, or visit a cafe you’ve never been to. It’s amazing what you notice when you change the lens of your gaze to a more curious one.
Yours in fiction,
Caroline
